Today we celebrate the feast of St. John of God and reflect on how we are to pray…

Despite a life full of tragedy compounded by poor choices, Saint John of God accepted God’s immense love for him and chose to express his gratitude by caring for the sick and mentally ill. His compassion inspired others to join him, and the Brothers Hospitallers was founded in 1572. The order now maintains a presence in 53 countries, operating more than 300 hospitals (2 Minute Read)

“This is how you are to pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
– Matthew 6:9-13

The Our Father is the perfect prayer. Saint Teresa of Avila spoke extensively on it in her book Way of Perfection. Enjoy this excerpt provided by Crossroads Initiative:

“On earth as it is in heaven…”
Now, then. The greatest joy in the kingdom of heaven (the greatest among many) seems to me to be that we will no longer be tied up with earthly concerns but will have rest and glory within us – rejoicing that gives joy to everyone, peace that lasts for ever – satisfaction in ourselves, a satisfaction that comes from seeing how everyone is praising the Lord and blessing and hallowing his name, while no-one offends him. Everyone loves him. Each soul has no wish other than to love him: it cannot stop loving him because it knows him truly.

If only we knew him like that even here on earth, we would love him in the same way – not with that degree of perfection, of course, but in a very different way from the way we love him now.
– St. Teresa of Avila, Way of Perfection

This is the altar crucifix (about 120x70cm) with polychromy and gold added... ‘Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle... Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty - he is the King of glory.’

A Challenge

Find a quiet place to say an Our Father slowly and audibly. Allow yourself to hear the words coming off of your lips and take pauses between each sentence. Let us not take this perfect prayer for granted. Amen 🙏
